Oncologic Surgery

At AMVS, our highly integrated surgery and oncology services provide an extensive knowledge and practice base for treatment of tumors of all locations. This knowledge also helps predict prognosis as well as guide any additional therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or alternative therapies.

The most important aspect of oncology in general is to obtain an accurate diagnosis prior to attempting definitive surgery or other therapy. In animals, this often includes performing a fine needle aspirate of the tumor or a biopsy. Once a diagnosis is obtained, the next step in the treatment work up includes staging. Staging is a term used to describe “where in the body is the tumor.” For most tumors, staging includes blood work, chest xrays, and/or an abdominal ultrasound.

Once proper preoperative procedures have been performed, and surgery has been deemed the best treatment option, the AMVS surgical and oncology team of specialists will help guide the surgical planning to maximize tumor control while minimizing surgical trauma and pain. Minimally invasive approaches using larparoscopic and thoracoscopic techniques are utilized when possible as patient comfort is of utmost concern regardless of the surgical approach or procedure.
