Dr. Higgins was raised in Omaha, Nebraska. After receiving her B.S. in Zoology and B.A. in Journalism from Colorado State University, she spent some time working in London’s fine art industry. She returned to Colorado to attend veterinary school and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 2007. During veterinary school she started a Master’s Program in Microbiology and Immunology and received her Master’s degree in 2007 as well. Dr. Higgins completed an internship in small animal medicine at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in Denver, CO and then joined the AECC team in 2008.
Dr. Higgins past research involved the investigation of lymphoma, leukemia, and ehrlichiosis (tick-borne disease) in dogs. Her clinical interests include emergency medicine, international veterinary medicine, and public speaking. Dr. Higgins has been the recipient of several awards including the Pfizer Veterinary Specialty Team Award in Internal Medicine and the AKC Companion Animal Recovery Award. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Dr. Higgins loves working as an emergency doctor. She also enjoys foreign excursions to work with people and animals in developing nations, as she is able to bring together her two greatest passions, travel and medicine. Thus far she has been lucky enough to travel to both Africa and South America through veterinary medical organizations. Dr. Higgins lives in Denver with her husband Patrick and 3 dogs (Mickey, Darby, and Frida). In her spare time she enjoys cooking, reading, and planning her next big adventure.
